PURPOSE OF SULFOCYANIATION

Surface saturation of the metal during sulfocyanidation changes the state of the structure and thereby increases:
  • static and dynamic strength,
  • hardness
  • running-in of rubbing surfaces,
  • anti-seize properties
  • wear resistance
  • corrosion properties of these materials.
The sulfocyanidation process is carried out in gas environments and molten salts at a temperature of 560-620 ° C for one to four hours. The process in liquid environments is more common and applied. The purpose of sulfocyanidation is to increase wear resistance, endurance limit, improve the running-in of rubbing parts, as well as significantly increase anti-seize properties. For liquid sulfocyanidation, baths are used that contain salts that provide saturation with nitrogen, carbon, sulfur, and neutral salts. During sulfocyanidation, a hardened layer is formed on the surface, which in its structure resembles carbonitrided, the difference being the presence of a zone of sulfides on the surface. Since the processing temperature does not exceed 620 ° C, structural transformations similar to those that occur as a result of austenitization during hardening do not occur, which allows cooling at any speed without the risk of martensite. For this reason, unlike hardening, deformation and warping of sulfocyanided parts and tools are insignificant. This makes it possible to simplify subsequent processing and even get rid of it altogether, i.e. to subject finished parts that have undergone cutting and grinding to sulfocyanidation without an allowance for final processing.

MAIN STAGES OF MANUFACTURING PARTS SUBJECT TO SULFOCYANIZATION

  1. Rough mechanical processing.
  2. Preliminary heat treatment of metal (the so-called thermal improvement), including consists of two operations — hardening and tempering (high). Such treatment provides high viscosity and strength of the core of the part. Hardening of steel is carried out at high temperatures (850-950˚С) with subsequent cooling in oil or water. Tempering temperature — from 580 to 670˚С.
  3. Final mechanical treatment of the part, including grinding of metal. These operations are required so that the part has the required (final) geometric parameters.
  4. Protection of parts of the metal surface that are not planned to be sulfocyanated. Liquid glass coating or tin coating is applied, which is applied to the workpiece with a thickness of no more than 0.015 mm using electrolytic technology.
  5. Direct simultaneous saturation of the steel surface with nitrogen, carbon and sulfur — sulfocyanidation.

Steel sulfocyanidation

is a metal surface treatment process that involves introducing sulfides and cyanides into the surface layer of steel. This process occurs at high temperatures and prolonged exposure of the sulfocyanide mixture to the metal.

The main purpose of steel sulfocyanidation is to improve its properties, such as resistance to wear, corrosion and material fatigue. In addition, sulfocyanidation increases the hardness of steel and improves its resistance to high temperatures and mechanical stress.

Sulfocyanidation is used in various industries, including the production of automotive parts, tools, machinery and equipment. This process allows to increase the service life of parts and equipment, as well as to improve their reliability and safety in operation.

Also, sulfocyanidation can be used to enhance the properties of specific parts, such as axles, disks, chains, track pins, which improves their performance and extends their service life.
